"Nick’s paintings connect us to the vastness of the landscapes and distinctive quality of light of the Arctic. Capturing a world made up of the simplest of ingredients – ice, water, rock and light – they offer a point of connection with this astonishing region and its remarkable beauty."
Professor Joe Smith, Director of the Royal Geographical Society
"Your images do indeed transport one to a stillness and a connection with nature, which is often hard to find."
Rosalind Greehy
"Nick’s work conveys his first-hand experience of being in the Arctic as Artist in Residence with the Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute. Navigating through the icy sea by ship and canoe he has managed to capture the extraordinary light and abstract forms he encountered leaving us to consider the fleeting beauty of a rapidly changing Polar landscape."

"Nicholas Jones is among those who believe it is still possible to say something meaningful and exciting by applying paint to canvas. Braver still, he chooses to work within the long tradition of landscape painting that has flourished with particular vigour in this country… There is in [his paintings] the same identification with the spirit of place that permeates the great line of English landscapists, from the Norfolk school through Turner and Samuel Palmer to Paul Nash and the neo-Romantics led by Graham Sutherland, and some members of the St Ives school, notably Peter Lanyon."
Roger Berthoud, Journalist and author of acclaimed biographies of Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore
"Nick’s Arctic paintings capture the vastness and the stillness of the region in a way that astounds me. I experienced moments of awe while looking at them - the silence that they portray seemed to draw me in and my inner mental noise just disappeared."
Jeremy Carruthers, Bristol
"The paintings of Nick Jones transport the viewer to the silence and mystery of the high Arctic. The calm seas are punctuated by monolithic ice shapes and distant dark, mountain ranges. There seems to be a suspension of time. Sometimes rainbows unexpectedly intrude and bring sharp, clear colour to the hazy space."
Barbara Rae CBE RA
“It’s not so easy being a landscape artist in the early 21st Century but Nick has remained faithful to the genre for 30 years, skilfully evolving his process, palette, subject-mater and scenery, finding peace and wonder in equal measure; an artist of great diligence and dedication.”

"The aurora is notoriously difficult to capture on canvas. It is so wide and changing. It can be so subtle at times and then so suddenly flaring and alive with movement and colour… As well as some of the wondrous moments… Nicholas Jones’ pictures capture the subtlety and delicacy of the aurora, and evoke the experience of being there and witnessing the aurora in the landscape.”
Dr Melanie Windridge, Author of "Aurora: In Search of the Northern Lights”
“Meeting Nick and seeing his art was the absolute highlight of my cruise to the Arctic in 2018. For me his amazing paintings captured the emotional impact of the cold, empty polar spaces in ways that photographs can't. While aboard the ship I enjoyed being able to talk to him about the experiences that led to the paintings… Adding art to the trip greatly enhanced the expedition experience for me.”
Linda Kahan, Washington
"Speaking as a glaciologist who has spent many field seasons in the Arctic, on land and aboard ship, I am struck by how very powerfully Nick Jones' paintings capture the distinctive atmosphere of this icy world."
Julian Dowdeswell, Emeritus Professor and past Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge
"Your work has a rare beauty, a sense of the austere and monumental that brilliantly captures what we saw [in the Arctic]. When I look at your paintings, I can 'hear' the silence, which might seem a strange thing to say. But it's true."
Dr Simon Pierse RWS AWI, Emeritus Senior Lecturer, School of Art, Aberystwyth University

Reflections from a first time collector
I always feel honoured when someone chooses to live with one of my paintings — especially when it's their very first experience of owning original art.
A recent collector shared these thoughtful reflections after purchasing three fire paintings from my open studio. Her words capture something I deeply hope for in my work: that it continues to unfold and deepen over time, offering quiet presence in the rhythm of everyday life.
“I first saw Nick’s paintings at an exhibition of his work at Nature in Art. After seeing, and liking, these paintings, I visited his open studio day. This was a very busy event and, at this stage, I hadn’t really formed an idea of buying anything.
When I got home, I looked more carefully at his website, and his paintings of fire immediately chimed with me. I contacted Nick to see if it would be possible to go back to his studio with a view to buying something. Nick made this very easy and spent a lot of time helping me make my choice. (I ended up buying a group of three small paintings.) They are now hanging in the lounge and I’m delighted with them.
Prior to this, my experience of original art was always in galleries. However much I was struck by individual paintings, time was always limited, and my eye was always being drawn to new images. Now, with these paintings, there is an ongoing, deepening relationship. Differing light levels can subtly change them, but there is also a conversation which keeps going over time.”
